COMPOSER BIOGRAPHY
Lei Liang (b.1972) is a Chinese-born American composer of mostly stage and chamber works that have been performed throughout the world. He earned numerous prizes as both a composer and pianist in China before coming to the US at age 17. He studied composition with Robert Cogan and Mario Davidovsky, and received degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music (BM & MM with honors and distinction) and Harvard University (PhD). Lei Liang has received commissions from the Heidelberger Philharmonisches Orchester, the Manhattan Sinfonietta, the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, the Fromm Music Foundation, Pro Musicis, the Ying Quartet, the Meridian Arts Ensemble, the Callithumpian Consort, Yesaroun' Duo, IIIZ+, among other organizations and ensembles. He was the recipient of a Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship and a Heinrich Strobel Foundation bursary from the South West German Radio Experimentalstudio. Lei Liang is also active in the preservation of traditional Asian music. His articles have appeared in numerous journals, notably in the journals Contemporary Music Review (as issue co-editor and author) and Sonus. Lei Liang’s music is released on Telarc, Encounter and Opal Records. A monographic CD of his works will be released on Mode Records. Lei Liang was Junior Fellow at the Society of Fellows at Harvard University. He has taught as honorary professor of composition and sound design at Wuhan Conservatory of Music, as Distinguished Visiting Professor at Shaanxi Normal University College of Arts in Xi'an, and as Visiting Assistant Professor of Music at Middlebury College. He is currently Assistant Professor of Composition at the University of California, San Diego.
